Another Monday January 11

Another different landscape this morning at our peak district cottages. Another covering of snow. Yesterday I cleared all the snow of plants, will have to do it again. A grey morning with low visibility. Waste not collected for second week running, never even saw the lorry but suspect as A515 closed between Ashbourne and Parsley Hay (apparently) it would not have not even have got here. I know we’re not the only ones who haven’t had rubbish collected but as business we pay extra to have our rubbish collected and I don’t think we’ll get a refund. The laundry from last week ws returned, but as van unable to get up the drive we went down to meet it with the wheelbarrow. Handyman called in and said if we thought we had plenty snow here we should go and see it up at Bretton and beyond. The Barrell Inn pub has been closed for a while. He is trying to source some salt for us. Apparently the local councils have commandeered all salt from builders merchants so despite the fact we are on a waiting list it is unlikely we’ll get any while the crisis is on. Spoke to Joanna and having spoke to the president it has been agreed that we will cancel this weeks WI meeting. Did daily check of all the cottages, the problem time will be when (when!) we get a thaw, but they did have a story on the news about a house that had to be demolished after the heating had been turned on. The owners had been away and had the heating off, pipes froze and pressure built up in the hot water tank so when the heating was turned on the hot water tank blew up and the house had to be demolished. We have actually kept the heating on low in all the empty cottages to protect the cottages and when the next guests arrive the cottage wont feel cold either.
