A dull day but milder. Starting to see green patches in the hills and it is OK to drive cars up into the courtyard. A milder week forecast so perhaps no more snow at our Derbyshire cottages. Two guests out but none back in today. Went down to get the paper and empty the bottle bins. Noticeably busier in Bakewell. After coffee and usual housekeeping bits decided to go out for a few hours. Took the dogs with the aim of a short walk somewhere. First stop was the Riverside Herb Centre between Hathersage and Hope. Noticed from an advert that it had a deli and cafe and thought we would try it for lunch. From the outside it looked as if nothing was open but when we went in we found a deli and cafe. It was very nice and we must have arrived at the right time for by the time our lunch arrived it was full. I noticed an actress on a neighbouring table. I recognised her but wasn’t sure if it was her, it was only when one of her companions called her by name that I knew it was Siobhan Redmond. Bought a pudding for Andrew from the deli to say thank you for all his snow plough help! As Ladybower Reservoir was close by we thought about a walk there but instead headed for Redmires Reservoir on the edge of Sheffield on the recommendation of a recent guest. The snow and ice was still present here so we were not able to reach the car park and we could see the footpaths were still very icy. Set off back to Hathersage ‘over the tops’ with some incredible views towards Sheffield in places and also passing an Alpaca Centre! From Burbage Bridge down to Hathersage the road was barely passable in places and for most of the way cars had to pass each other carefully as there was only room for one car on the road where there was not snow or ice. Could have taken some nice shots of Carl Wark and Higger Tor but was concentrating on the road instead even though I was not driving! Back in Hathersage we stopped for a little walk. Luckily most of the outdoor shops welcome dogs on leads. We decided to try the footpath up to the Church to see the (reputed) grave of Little John but we only got so far before the path became too icy to continue. I have found a walk taking in ‘the sights’ of Hathersage so we must try it some time. Back home and a few hours to catch up on emails and phone calls and have dinner before being collected by Andrew and Joanna. Tonight we were going to see the film Atonement at Over Haddon Village Hall. A good film enjoyed by all present.
