Thursday 5 February was a dull day at our Bolehill cottages near Bakewell (see link). At least it was mild enough during the day for a thaw to set in. The day went in jobs in Derwent, Chris finishing odd jobs and a cleaner here to give it a good clean. I was putting curtains and bits back as well as other jobs in other cottages. It turned quite murky in the afternoon and after an early tea we headed to Over Haddon to pick up one of the WI ladies then drive over to
Youlgreave. It was Pantomime night and we all enjoyed the production of Mother Goose. Some of us ex Over Haddon WI ladies took our other halves along too. It had turned much colder by the time we left and the snow turned to ice where it had started to melt. Woke up to a frosty but sunny Friday morning. One departure and one arrival and one cleaner here. Handyman came
up for an hour to help move some furniture around. Felt less cold during the day and the snow started to thaw again. More jobs in Derwent, feels like never ending list of jobs! Guests arrived just before 4pm, after which I went down to Bakewell to get some provisions for the weekend. A nice sunset on the way home but no opportunity to photo it. Saturday was more overcast but less cold and the snow continued its thaw. Finishing touches to Derwent in advance of guests arrivals, they were here by 3pm, they have been coming here for ten years. Time spent in housework and another nice sunset so we all went to take pictures.
Bakewell
Our Christmas
Christmas Eve dawned sunny but cold at our Bolehill cottages near Bakewell (see here). With our friends arriving for lunch we had a few hours for some last minute jobs and were joined for coffee by our neighbours from Haddon Grove Holiday Cottages. Friends arrived just after midday and we went down to Bakewell. It was quite busy but we were able to eat at the Upstairs Cafe. Back home for a quiet afternoon and evening when we enjoyed a takeaway. Christmas Day again dawned sunny and cold, just how I like Christmas Day. After breakfast and lunch preparations the men walked down to the Lathkil with the dogs and I drove round with friend after we had put the dinner on. Nice to say Merry Xmas to some of the villagers. The men walked back and we enjoyed a late roast beef lunch and a quiet end to the day. On Boxing Day we decided to go down to Bakewell to see the hunt set off. It had been a number of years since we had last seen it leave Bakewell. It used to leave from the square by the Co-Op but in recent years it has left from the Agricultural Centre. We thought we would have coffee first only to fine the hunt had set off earlier than expected so we missed it.
So we had a wander around the shops and along the river before home for a late lunch. We had been monitoring the weather forecast since Christmas Eve as snow had appeared in the forecast for late Boxing Day. Our friends had planned to stay with us until Saturday morning but as the forecast worsened we all thought it best they headed off home before the snow arrived. They set off just as the rain turned to snow, earlier than forecast but luckily they got home without any problems. One of the cottages due to depart on Saturday thought they would leave before the snow arrived as well. Another cottage were heading to Buxton to see the Pantomime but we persuaded them not to. We did a walk down and back up the drive to salt it but at the end of the night the forecast 2-3inches was nearer six inches and we heard of many problems on the roads in the area. As I did not get any pictures of the hunt here are some photos from the Christmas Tree festival at Bakewell Church.
Sister comes to stay
No departures or arrivals at our Bolehill cottages near Bakewell (see here) on Tuesday 9 September but my sister arrived to stay. I went mid morning to collect her from Chesterfield station. I went via Chatsworth Farm shop and after leaving the shop and travelling through Baslow the traffic came to halt. A very large load was negotiating the roundabout from the Sheffield road to the Chesterfield road so the first part of my drive up the Chesterfield road was very slow. Luckily I could turn off at the Robin Hood pub and I got to the station just as my sister’s train pulled in. On the way back home we met the heavy load making its way through Chesterfield. After lunch we went to Buxton as Chris’s glasses had broke and we needed some bulbs from the electrical wholesalers. We had an enjoyable stroll around Buxton in the warm sunshine and stopped for afternoon tea at Number 6 near the Opera House. Wednesday was our WI outing in the afternoon and after a morning of chatting with sister and an early lunch we picked up Joanna and one of the Over Haddon members and avoiding Bakewell and the traffic problems we drove via Youlgrave and Matlock to Clay Cross. Here we were visiting the private museum of the master farrier who came to talk to us a couple of months ago. We had an enjoyable couple of hours at the museum before returning home. Thursday was our retail therapy day and sister and I enjoyed a couple of hours wandering around Bakewell followed by lunch at the Upstairs Cafe. I also drove round to the Chatsworth Farm shop before returning home where it was still warm enough for a cup of tea on the patio. In the evening we went down to Bakewell and had a nice meal at Le Mistral. Everywhere we went on Thursday there was talk of the problems the traffic lights were causing and there are still five more weeks to go!
Bakewell chaos
Saturday 6 September started cool and damp but the forecast was for an improvement at our Bolehill cottages near Bakewell (see here). Three departures and five arrivals and two cleaners here. One of those mornings where Chris was needed quite a bit for minor repairs, just as well we have spares of almost everything! Glad Chris had cut the grass on Friday. Cleaning and checks finished by lunchtime. Some cow movement took place, we now have three fields with heifers on this side of the road. Two cottage arrivals here by 3.30 with two more by 4.30 and final one by5.30. Four have been before. Sun finally came out when taking dogs for their evening walk so another nice sunset. At least Sunday
was a pleasant day. No departures but one arrival (cottage already prepared). A day of relaxing and jobs round the house and Chris did some outside jobs. Cottage arrived about 4pm. In the evening we went to the Buxton Opera House to see Elkie Brooks. We saw her there a couple of years ago but she was much better this time. Up early Monday to go to the market and took some photos of the sunrise for a change! Only got half way down the hill to Bakewell when got caught in traffic so after 20minutes I turned round and came home. Apparently there were four way traffic lights in the centre of Bakewell and traffic was queuing as far back as Haddon Hall down the A6 at one point. They had started the gas mains
repairs near the main roundabout a couple of days early, and on a market day. At least I was able to warn other guests of the problems. Two departures and one arrival and one cleaner here. Everything ready in time for guests arrival at 3pm. With a nice day again Chris was outside strimming, pruning and weed killing. In the afternoon I got a room ready for my sister who was coming to stay and later spoke to our friends in Yorkshire. Nice to chat with guests too.
A walk to Bakewell
Thursday started misty at our Bolehill Cottages near Bakewell (see here) but by the time two cottages departed we had a blue sky with sunshine. Our walk was to start from here and head to Bakewell via Over Haddon and Haddon hall. Chris dropped the car near Lady Manners School before we set off (to save walking up the road home) by which time the cloud had rolled back in. Did the
usual walk down to Over Haddon but from the pub we walked across the fields towards Haddon Hall. In a number of fields there were bullocks who were naturally interested in the dogs but Smudge showed them who was boss. We were joined for a while by another couple who were walking towards Bakewell but where paths diverged they took a more direct route whilst we walked down to Haddon Hall. We also came across someone practising target shooting in an
adjoining field and that upset Blue. As we reached Haddon Hall we wondered if we could use the restaurant without paying to go into the house. The answer was we could have if we hadn’t had the dogs with us so that is worth knowing. We walked along the A6 for a couple of hundred yards before picking up a path along the river back to Bakewell. I thought this would be quite pleasant but the path was narrow and overgrown with nettles.
We emerged in fields before we found ourselves at the Agriculture Centre. Into Bakewell for lunch which we had at ‘because we like it’ where we sat outside with the dogs. After a little wander around town Chris collected the car and picked us up as the dogs seemed to be flagging. A rest during the afternoon then our friends went home and we had a light tea before I went to Joanna’s for a WI committee meeting. Friday had a misty start and although it briefly brightened up most of the day
was overcast with a heavy almost stormy feel. Two departures and one arrival and two cleaners here to keep up with cleaning. After cottage checks and lunch I went down to Bakewell to get provisions for the weekend. Back in time for cottage arrival who has been before. Time for chatting with guests before catching up with some paper work and preparations for Saturday.
A walk at last!
Monday 1st September started a bit wet but brightened up mid morning at our Bolehill Cottages near Bakewell (see here). Two departures and two arrivals and one cleaner here. Usual Monday chores and everything ready by lunchtime. Chris seemed to spend most of the day helping others with web site problems. I spent the afternoon on accounts and getting a room ready for our friends from Yorkshire who are coming to stay for a few days. First guests here just after 3pm and second cottage here just after 4pm. Catching some nice
sunsets at the moment but soon it will be too dark to take the dogs for a walk after dinner. Down to Bakewell first thing on Tuesday then jobs around the house until our friends arrived in the afternoon. No departures but one arrival here later in the day. Another pleasant day and after a few hours of chatting to friends we went down to Piedaniels in Bakewell and enjoyed their excellent value set meal. We had planned a walk for
Wednesday but it started quite misty. Good thing about our friends staying is that we try and get out walking. Undeterred by the mist we drove over to Ashford and had coffee at the tea rooms before setting off along the river towards Bakewell. By then the murk had lifted and it got quite humid. We did this walk last year and I thought it would be a nice one to get back into walking mode as it had been so long since we did a walk. Just before Bakewell we crossed the packhorse bridge and
picked up the bridleway beside Holme Hall. From the top of the only climb we got nice views back to Bakewell. We headed across the fields to Great Longstone where we stopped for lunch at The Crispin. Afterwards we walked to Monsal Head and then took the path back to Ashford from here rather than walk back to Ashford from Little Longstone so it made for a longer walk than I had planned. Although it never really brightened up it stayed warm. In the evening we went to Carriages at Newhaven where we enjoyed another lovely meal.
All quiet on the Bolehill front
Wednesday 2nd July was a fine day at our Bolehill cottages near Bakewell see here. One departure
and one arrival but with cottage already prepared no cleaner here. Handyman here though and he and Chris made the most of a fine day to do some work outside. There is always something to do! I made the most of some vacant cottages to do some odd jobs and catch up with WI work as we had a committee meeting in the evening. Cottage arrived about 5pm and after an early dinner we went down to Bakewell to have a look at the well dressings. A variety of themes with most based in Bath Gardens, which was looking very colourful for carnival week, with a few more nearer the Church. The streets also looked quite bright
with all the bunting. Back in time for the short committee meeting in our dining room as we have most of the summer planned. Thursday saw no
departures but two arrivals and one cleaner here. Handyman here again to help Chris put a new roof on the log store as we had noticed the old one was leaking badly over the winter. Plenty of jobs to keep me occupied and in the afternoon I went down to Bakewell to get some provisions for the weekend as my arrivals would not be here until the evening. Both cottages arrived between 6.30 and 7 pm, one has been before and are here for two weeks. The others were from Australia. Friday was a pleasant day
with a forecast of rain later. No departures but one arrival, again later in the day, so time to do jobs. The rain managed to hold off until later in the day so existing guests managed to make the most of a fine day. Arrivals here by 7pm so then we could relax for
the evening.
The first curlew
Surely a sign of spring! Heard the first curlew when I took the dogs out for their early morning walk at our Bolehill cottages near bakewell (see here). Two departures and after packing rucksacks we headed over to Cressbrook where we parked near Upperdale Farm at the free car park. From here we crossed the river and walked up the track to the Monsal trail and picked up the lane to Brushfield. By the time we got to the Monsal Trail we had taken our coats off and they didn’t go back on for the rest of the day. There was a time before the Monsal Trail opened in its current form that you would meet plenty of walkers on the tracks around here but during our walk round to Litton we probably saw no more than a dozen other walkers. On the first part of the walk we had views along Monsal Dale and across to Taddington. We have done this route before and we stopped to have lunch before the descent to the Monsal Trail at Litton. Here we had some lovely panoramic views across to Tideswell. We were on the busy Monsal Trail for just a couple of hundred yards before picking up the old Monsal Trail. In the afternoon warmth we made our way along the old trail stopping to admire the scenery (with Smudge unwittingly sitting on a frog at one of our pauses) with views along Millers Dale and to Cressbrook. We picked up the new Monsal Trail for the short stretch before the track back to the car and we stopped at the Aisseford Tea rooms in Ashford to pick up my first ice cream of the season. Sorry no photo but I had been using the new camera on our walk so enjoy the photos. After dinner we headed to Buxton to see Nabucco at The Opera House. A very enjoyable production.
The first snow
Sunday 9th Feb was a mixed day weather wise at our Bolehill Cottages (see link). Two departures and first arrival in Dove. There was a delivery of a hob for Magpie which means all our cottages will now have a ceramic hob. We did a number of jobs around the house and cottages with Dove arriving about 3.30. Awaiting the feedback! Monday was a pleasant day with Dove out for an early walk. Handyman up and with Dove out of the way attention was turned back to other cottages. Magpie had the new hob installed. Talk of the morning was the car accident in Bakewell where a car hit the bridge demolishing a part of it and ended up on its roof in the river. The driver was able to walk away shocked but relatively unhurt but the bridge had to be closed to recover the car, something that is not wanted on a Monday on market day. I turned my attention to jobs in other cottages including yet more curtains! I also stocked up again on logs. In the evening I went to Over Haddon for the indoor bowls. Tuesday started fine with rain forecast in the morning and wintry showers to follow so we were quite surprised when it started snowing. I kept reassuring the handyman and cleaner that it would turn to rain but by the time there were a couple of centimetres of snow on the ground even I was wondering why the forecast still said rain. It had even taken the forecasters by surprise. Early afternoon the sun came out and it started to melt in places. I felt it was safe enough to drive to Bakewell to get provisions for the next few days. Naturally there was no snow in Bakewell! Back home I took the dogs out for a walk in the fields. Enjoy the photos.
Bakewell Christmas weekend
A busy weekend in Bakewell not far from our Bolehill cottages (see link) with many events happening in and around Bakewell. Down to Bakewell first thing with Chris so we could go to the Farmers Market. This was busier than usual and after this we had a walk round Bakewell to see the stalls set out selling gifts and food at the Christmas Market. We had the dogs with us and they are used to being dragged round events such as this with the only incident being Blue having one small woof at the clog dancers. Perhaps he wanted to join in! From here we headed over to Baslow as we wanted to look at some paint and we stopped for coffee at Charlie’s Bistro and then had a look at the old packhorse bridge with the toll booth. As it had been busy in Bakewell we drove back via Calver, stopping at the garden centre, and Ashford. In the afternoon Chris tried out some paints and I did some cooking. Sunday was forecast to be cloudy but it got off to a sunny start and clouded up lunchtime. One departure.
Invited one of the cottages over for coffee and a chat which also proved useful as we chatted about decorating! They had been to Tissington to the Christmas Market so we thought we would go and have a look. On the way there I looked over and could see one of the wind turbines had been erected at Carsington Pastures. There was plenty going on at Tissington, tours of the hall, pony trap rides and WI tea in the church! At the village hall there was a craft fair and we had a crepe for lunch and for the first time I went and had a look at the candle shop. With other shops also open I manage to source some Christmas presents. Back home and after tea we set off to Buxton the Pavilion Arts Centre to see Leo Houlding, a rock climber. We have seen him before and this time he gave us a talk and slide show on his recent climbs in Antarctica and the Amazon. He was also in an episode of Top Gear once where he climbed a cliff face beating Jeremy Clarkson who was driving an Audi. Rather him than me. See the rest of the weekend’s photos here.
