Buxton and Weather Stats

IMG_4023Sunday was a bright and breezy day at Bolehill cottages (see link).  Three departures and one arrival later in the day with cottage already cleaned.  For us it was a day of paperwork including tax returns.  Guests arrived about 3.30.  In the evening we went to Buxton to the Opera House to see the Tenors Unlimited a trio of tenors who were quite entertaining.  Monday started dull but brightened up during the day.  No departures or arrivals but one cleaner up to catch up from Sunday.  After lunch we drove over to Belper to look at a suite then coming back we stopped at Wirksworth as we haven’t been there for a while.  We had a walk round the town and the church.  The church is Grade 1 listed and is notable for its Anglo-Saxon carvings in particular a coffin lid that is now mounted on on of the walls inside the church.  It is also one of the few remaining churches in the UK that performs a “clipping the church” ceremony in which the parishioners hold hands and form a ring around the church once a year.  In the evening Chris went to the Bakewell Photographic Society and after a chin wag with my sister on the phone I caught up on some TV programmes I had recorded for me!

As September ends here are the weather stats.  The hottest day and night was the 4th with highest temperature 21.9 C on the 4th.   The coldest night was the 15th with coldest day the 16th with lowest temperature of 5.1 C on the 15th.  The wettest day was the 6th with .65 inches and total for month was 1.96 inches (9/12 had 3.88 inches).

The longest day

IMG_3224Thursday started quite overcast and threatening at our cottages (see here) but the rain held off until later in the day. Two departures and one cleaner up. A few odd jobs in the morning then after lunch we headed to Matlock, me to Sainsbury’s and Chris to a glass supplier. When back we had a chat with one of our guests about a walk they had done. It’s always nice to have a natter with guests, especially in weeks like this when we have a number of retuning guests. Friday was a pleasant day. No departures but one arrival later in the day. A trip down to Bakewell to get provisions for the weekend and with Joanna and Andrew away for a few days Chris went down with Smudge to bring the cows in. After an early tea we headed of to Buxton for a talk by a climber who was the first to scale the Angel Falls in Venezuela. Cottage arrived IMG_3222while we were out. On the way back at 10.30pm it was still light, Apparently we missed a good sunset. Magpie Mine stood out against the red of the sky. Wished I had my camera with me. So it’s all down hill from now on as the nights start to lengthen again. As long as we have some more summer days that’s all that matters so here are a couple of pictures of Bolehill in Bloom.

Wintry weather

Tuesday started fine but degenerated into some wintry showers, at one point it looked like the snow would settle.  One cottage out and one cleaner up.  Handyman also up to put up the Christmas lights at our peak district cottages so I was happy.  In the evening we went to Chatsworth House (again) this time to see a preview of a light show called Elemental Force. This used Chatsworth House as a backdrop for a light and sound show to create a film of the areas industrial heritage and history.  There was also a high wire act and fireworks.  There will be a number of similar events at other historic properties in the area over the next few months.   It did not last long but was very fascinating.  After this we went to the Devonshire Arms in Pilsley for a bite to eat.  Wednesday was another cold fine day and I used the day to do some accounts in the morning and in the afternoon Chris and I sat down and planned some jobs that  need doing.  In the evening Joanna collected me and we went to Bakewell for this months committee meeting.  Next week’s party and next year’s programme were the main discussion points.  The forecast for Thursday included snow so first thing on Thursday morning Chris took me down to Bakewell so I could get the provisions for the weekend.  We then popped over to Buxton to check on progress.  On the way back it started to flurry but all we ended up with was a covering.  Later on it rained then snowed again and then it got cold.  Here are some photos from Thursday morning’s colourful sunrise.  I was disturbed by a flock of Fieldfares that flew overhead.  At this time of year we usually have some flocks in our fields.

Stormy weather

Kept awake by rain early morning and by time took dogs out we had already had .75 in rain at our peak district cottages.  One cottage departed. Down to Bakewell mid morning to get hair cut and luckily it cleared up so I didn’t get my hair wet afterwards.  Got some provisions for the next few days before heading home for lunch.  The afternoon went in paperwork and one of the exhibitors at Chatsworth returned for this weekends event, the other one having stayed on but popping home to restock overnight.  The forecast for Thursday was not promising with high winds and rain expected from lunchtime.  One departure in the morning and one cleaner up.  After an early lunch I headed to Matlock stopping at Peak Village first.  It was still dry when I left and headed for Sainsbury’s and still dry when I started back for home although the wind had picked up.  One of our guests followed me up the hill narrowly missing a for sale sign that suddenly took off.  In the car park there were a few small branches down and I noticed one of my hanging baskets had also been blown down so Chris went and took the remaining ones down as the wind was very strong by now.  We also allowed guests to park in the courtyard as it was more sheltered.  At 5pm the heavens just opened and by now I was wondering if I would make it to Buxton to see a performance of Calendar Girls at the Opera House.  The heavy rain and wind subsided by the time I set off but there was lots of very big puddles to negotiate.  I took one of the other Over Haddon WI members with me and we met up with others from the WI there.  After a wonderful performance the weather had calmed down for our drive back.

Buxton

A trip on Thursday afternoon to Buxton to get some provisions for the weekend including some of those M&S meal deals. As it was nice in the evening we managed to eat al fresco.  Friday saw one departure and one cleaner up at our and a chance to get one cottage ready ahead of Saturday. Chris also managed to replace the shattered window without any problems.  The day started fine with rain forecast later in the day and luckily it didn’t really start until much later in the day so this weeks guests have had a really nice week.  Well it is July after all!  One of our cottages has been here for the well established Buxton Festival with its Fringe being described as ‘the warm up to Edinburgh’.  There is also an annual Gilbert & Sullivan Festival in August and we will have guests staying here at our cottages near Buxton. On Friday evening we joined the Buntings and their Over Haddon’s neighbours and friends for an enjoyable meal at the Lathkil Hotel to celebrate Fay’s graduation.  She is also lucky to have secured a job with Morrison’s so we wish her luck for the future.
