It was snowing at 7.30 on Tuesday morning at our Bolehill cottages near Bakewell (see here). It didn’t last long on the ground but through the morning we had some wintry showers. Apparently Snake Pass was only passable with care. A busy day with one departure and one cleaner here to keep up with cleaning. Tuesday handyman up here to do some more outside jobs and we had a posse of tree surgeons and workmen pruning or felling trees parallel to the power lines. I know have a better view from my desk! Odd jobs for me in the morning and in the afternoon I went to Sainsbury’s at Matlock. Another lovely clear evening so great for photographs when I took the dogs out for their walk. Another showery day was forecast for Wednesday so we opted for a trip to Sheffield. It has been about a year since we last went and had a good mooch about the centre of Sheffield. We managed to find the John Lewis car park for once, usually the back roads and one way systems defeat us but not this time. The Snooker World Championships are taking place at The Crucible so there were lots of TV vans there. We had lunch in one of the cafés behind the town hall and came back via Edensor Tea room for a late afternoon tea. Thursday 30th April was a cold day with showers in the
morning but brighter in the afternoon. No arrivals or departures. In the morning we went to see the accountant who lives just outside Great Longstone for a chat about the accounts. After lunch we did some odd jobs before helping bring the first of the cows over the road for summer. They came across without any problems although Andrew has marked out one he reckons will have an ASBO before the week is out! Went down to Bakewell to get food etc for the weekend. Had an early tea then collected Joanna and we went to Buxton for the annual WI quiz representing Bakewell . We came second by two points.

More warm days
Another sunny warm April day on Thursday at our Bolehill cottages near Bakewell (see here). A day to catch up with jobs around the house and cottages and one cleaner here to keep up with cleaning. Chris spread some weed and feed over all the lawns as rain was forecast over the weekend but half way around the spreader broke (it also serves as the salt spreader) but luckily the agricultural merchants in Bakewell had one on offer so Chris had a new toy to play with! Two arrivals, both been before and both arriving just after 3pm so we popped down to Monyash to get some fresh milk and an ice cream. They’re getting to know me at the cafe! Another lovely sunset.
Friday 24 April started fine and warm but clouded up from lunchtime onwards, still we have had another nice week. Pity the forecast is deteriorating. One departure and one arrival with cottage already prepared. Chris did some outside painting of woodwork and I finally got my mind around some WI accounts. Cottage arrived just after 3pm giving me the rest of the afternoon to plan the following weeks cleaning rota and get in touch and confirm the dates – I do check beforehand in case there are any days they cannot do. I am temporarily losing one of my cleaners but luckily the cleaner who broke her wrist should be returning shortly. A little bit of drizzle in the evening, the ground is so dry there are cracks everywhere, looks more like July than April, we have only had a half inch of rain so far this month! Oh, and the Pennine Way is 50 years old!
A walk from Longnor
Tuesday 14 April was another a fine warm day at our Bolehill cottages near Bakewell (see here). With a full house and no departures or arrivals I had the day to catch up on other jobs in the morning as well as going down to Bakewell to get some provisions. A new restaurant has opened where Le mistral was so will report back in due course. I spent a few hours in the afternoon doing some gardening. Not quite as warm as last Tuesday but still a lovely day for our guests. Handyman up here today and he and Chris gave the outhouse a clean and repainted it. Lovely sunset, pity I forgot to take camera with me when I took the dogs out. Got that early morning call on Wednesday so by 9am we were down at the farm to see the cows come out for the summer. As Wednesday was forecast to be a nice day I had chosen one of our regular walks (and one of my favourite ones) to start our walking season. We headed to Longnor and set out along the River Manifold before heading up to the ridge via Over Boothlow. Down the hill and across the River Dove to Crowdicote and despite the recent dry spell there were still some swampy bits around. Through Crowdicote via the path to the green lane down from High Wheeldon. Along this part of the route we had views towards my favourite hills of Chrome and Parkhouse Hills. Over the River Dove again and then we stopped for lunch. From here it was just a short climb back up the ridge to Longnor. Just under four miles with a couple of ascents and descents. Too early for cake so we drove to Hartington where we picked up some cheese for tea. We came back via Monyash where we called into Tagg Farm just off the A515 where they have started selling milk from their Jersey cows straight to the public. As it was still nice we finished off with an ice cream from the Smithy! Enjoy the photos of the day.
A cool weekend and busy Monday
Saturday felt a lot fresher at our Bolehill cottages near Bakewell (see here). After a couple of hazy days the air quality was good again. One departure and one arrival and one cleaner here. With a busy day on Monday spent some time preparing cottages for Monday arrivals. Cottage arrived at 3pm after which I did some accounts. A busy day for bookings which is unusual for a Saturday and it was nice to take the dogs for a walk around the fields in the evening. Despite the forecast of showers later in the day it stayed dry. Sunday 12 April was a cool day and quite windy at times too. Two departures but no arrivals. A quiet morning and at lunchtime we thought we would go for a bacon butty at the Smithy Cafe in Monyash. Compared to last Sunday it was a lot quieter at the cafe. Jobs around the house in the afternoon and after an early dinner we went to the village hall for this months film which was Mr Turner. Monday was brighter and a bit milder. One departure and seven arrivals with two cleaners here to clean three cottages so a busy day but everything was ready in time for arrivals. Four cottages here between 3 and 4pm, two by 4.30pm and final one by 7pm. Five have been before, of which one was here last before we were here. More fine weather is forecast for the next couple of days and we are waiting for that all important phone call as the cows will be coming out any day now.
The mini summer continues
Wednesday was another summer like day at our Bolehill cottages near Bakewell (see here). Two departures with no arrivals and one cleaner here to keep up with cleaning. We had arranged to meet up with our friends from Yorkshire so we were away until later in the evening. Thursday 9 April was a warm and sunny day but it was more hazier than of late. Two departures and should have had three arrivals but one had to cancel as his partner was stuck in France due to the air traffic controller strikes. One cleaner here. Time for some catch up jobs before first cottage arrived at 3pm with second cottage here by 4pm. We then headed down to Over Haddon and the Garden Tea Room for tea and cake. It was warm sitting in the sun and we were able to have a chat with Mark and Karen, they have had a good start to their season. Just as we were leaving our friends from
Chelmorton were walking up from Lathkill Dale so we took them to the tea room and had more tea and a chat but no more cake. Back home it was nice to see the first BBQ taking place! Friday was supposed to be warmer but the wind took the edge of the temperature, still it was sunny and dry. Two departures and two arrivals and two cleaners here to keep up with cleaning. Popped down to Bakewell late morning to get provisions for the weekend. It was very busy. Back home we had one early paid for arrival at 1.30 and second cottage here by 3.30. Both have been before. Time for log stocking as the weekend is forecast to be cooler. Nice to see all the daffodils coming out.
Easter Weekend
Good Friday was a disappointing day weather wise at our Bolehill Cottages near Bakewell (see here). Friday was a wet day although it was not cold. One departure and three arrivals and one cleaner here. Cleaning went smoothly so I was able to get everything done in plenty of time. Don’t know why but I kept thinking it was Saturday! With all three cottages here by 3.45, one has been before, I had time to do more accounts in the afternoon. Some glimpses of blue sky later in the evening but forecast for the rest of the weekend is more promising. Have noticed that the daffodils are starting to come out. Saturday was a fine day, still mild but a little breezy at times. Three departures and one arrival and two cleaners here to keep up with cleaning. The morning seemed to disappear and the next thing it was 3pm and our guests arrived, they have been before. A catch up afternoon even if I didn’t get any accounts done, but I did get to take the dogs for their evening walk. Sunday was a pleasant and warm day for the time of year, a contrast to the previous Sunday. No departures but one arrival. Decided to head to Crich Tramway Museum as it was one of their WW2 weekends and we spent a good couple of hours wandering around and had a ride on a tram. It was very busy but we still enjoyed it and the dogs got fussed as usual. A few new displays since last time and our ticket will give us unlimited entry for the rest of the year. From here we went to Middleton Top Engine House as it was one of the engine working weekends. The beam engine was used to haul and lower wagons on the very steep incline of the Cromford and High Peak Railway. Back in time for guests arrival and it was even nice enough to have a cup of tea on the patio. Could have had first ice cream of the season from Monyash but it was too busy! Enjoy the pictures from Crich.
Castleton 8 Feb
Sunday was forecast to be another nice day at our Bolehill cottages near Bakewell (see here). Bad news from our main cleaner who had fallen over whilst out roller skating with friends on Saturday night and broken her wrist. Was able to cover her days for following week but she is going to be out of action for a couple of months. The snow is thawing pretty quickly now and I have spotted the first snowdrops! As we hadn’t been out for a while we thought we would drive over to Castleton and perhaps have a short walk. We picked up the paper in Bakewell and drove over to Castleton noting that there was still a lot of snow around and more as we reached Castleton. approaching Winnats Pass we could see where someone had been skiing down the hillside (there was a picture of it in the Independent). The aim was to go up to the Mam Tor car park and do a short walk to the top but despite getting there reasonably early the car park was already full and very icy as was the path up the Tor. Over the hillside looking towards Buxton and Glossop we could see it was foggy whereas we were in glorious sunshine with bright blue skies. No wonder it was so busy so we headed back down into Castleton and had a wander with the dogs stopping for coffee and cake (of course). Back home and time for some jobs before an early tea and off to the village hall for the monthly film night. This time it was Silver Linings Play book. Monday saw another day of wall to wall sunshine and blue skies. One departure and one arrival and one cleaner here. A different day for us today. We were heading to a hotel not far from Leeds to meet up with our friends from Yorkshire for lunch. This was to help my friend celebrate her birthday and we were joined by another couple and had a very enjoyable time. Headed back late afternoon noticing there was a nice sunset with the colours in the sky lasting for a long time. Cottage, who have been here a couple of times, arrived in our absence but I popped round and checked everything was OK before settling down for the evening – after I had sorted out all the phone calls and emails.
A slow thaw
Thursday 5 February was a dull day at our Bolehill cottages near Bakewell (see link). At least it was mild enough during the day for a thaw to set in. The day went in jobs in Derwent, Chris finishing odd jobs and a cleaner here to give it a good clean. I was putting curtains and bits back as well as other jobs in other cottages. It turned quite murky in the afternoon and after an early tea we headed to Over Haddon to pick up one of the WI ladies then drive over to
Youlgreave. It was Pantomime night and we all enjoyed the production of Mother Goose. Some of us ex Over Haddon WI ladies took our other halves along too. It had turned much colder by the time we left and the snow turned to ice where it had started to melt. Woke up to a frosty but sunny Friday morning. One departure and one arrival and one cleaner here. Handyman came
up for an hour to help move some furniture around. Felt less cold during the day and the snow started to thaw again. More jobs in Derwent, feels like never ending list of jobs! Guests arrived just before 4pm, after which I went down to Bakewell to get some provisions for the weekend. A nice sunset on the way home but no opportunity to photo it. Saturday was more overcast but less cold and the snow continued its thaw. Finishing touches to Derwent in advance of guests arrivals, they were here by 3pm, they have been coming here for ten years. Time spent in housework and another nice sunset so we all went to take pictures.
Our Christmas
Christmas Eve dawned sunny but cold at our Bolehill cottages near Bakewell (see here). With our friends arriving for lunch we had a few hours for some last minute jobs and were joined for coffee by our neighbours from Haddon Grove Holiday Cottages. Friends arrived just after midday and we went down to Bakewell. It was quite busy but we were able to eat at the Upstairs Cafe. Back home for a quiet afternoon and evening when we enjoyed a takeaway. Christmas Day again dawned sunny and cold, just how I like Christmas Day. After breakfast and lunch preparations the men walked down to the Lathkil with the dogs and I drove round with friend after we had put the dinner on. Nice to say Merry Xmas to some of the villagers. The men walked back and we enjoyed a late roast beef lunch and a quiet end to the day. On Boxing Day we decided to go down to Bakewell to see the hunt set off. It had been a number of years since we had last seen it leave Bakewell. It used to leave from the square by the Co-Op but in recent years it has left from the Agricultural Centre. We thought we would have coffee first only to fine the hunt had set off earlier than expected so we missed it.
So we had a wander around the shops and along the river before home for a late lunch. We had been monitoring the weather forecast since Christmas Eve as snow had appeared in the forecast for late Boxing Day. Our friends had planned to stay with us until Saturday morning but as the forecast worsened we all thought it best they headed off home before the snow arrived. They set off just as the rain turned to snow, earlier than forecast but luckily they got home without any problems. One of the cottages due to depart on Saturday thought they would leave before the snow arrived as well. Another cottage were heading to Buxton to see the Pantomime but we persuaded them not to. We did a walk down and back up the drive to salt it but at the end of the night the forecast 2-3inches was nearer six inches and we heard of many problems on the roads in the area. As I did not get any pictures of the hunt here are some photos from the Christmas Tree festival at Bakewell Church.
Ploughing Match
Wednesday 1st October was a fine day at Bolehill Cottages near Bakewell (see link). We decided to visit the Brailsford and District Ploughing and Hedge Laying Match, an annual event, held on the first Wednesday of October at different venues around the area. This year it was being held on the Kedleston Estate just outside Derby. We drove over to Kedleston via Ashbourne with the dogs after coffee. Joanna and Andrew had gone along earlier and despite the crowds we saw them a couple of times. Have always wanted to go to a ploughing match but was not sure what to expect. The event was like the Ashover Show minus animals but with a number of fields divided into strips and being ploughed with anything from a horse drawn plough to modern tractors with ploughs. The whole event, which was much bigger than I thought, took a few hours to walk around and it is one of the premier matches in the Midlands Region. Apart from the ploughing and hedge laying competitions there were various trade stands and craft and produce tents. We left mid afternoon and by chance came across a garden centre with tea room as the navigator (me) had taken us down the wrong lane. The Meynall Langley Trial Gardens are open during the spring/summer months when the trial work they do is on display. The attached garden centre and tea room are open most of the year. By the time we reached Ashbourne the sky was looking very foreboding and by Monyash it was raining. In the evening I collected Joanna for this months WI committee meeting. Enjoy the pictures.
