Merry Christmas to all our readers

We both wish you a Merry Christmas and all the best for 2010. Chris has started a blog too so you can read life at Bolehill Farm from his perspective. Hopefully we have some friends coming to stay for a few days weather permitting so will start blogging again next week. I do have some pictures of the snow to add. Don’t forget others who will be working on Christmas Day like farmers such as Andrew and NHS workers like my sister. Enjoy yourselves!

The snow arrives Sunday/Monday 20/21 December

Woke up to a covering of snow on Sunday and with two cottages departing Chris was out clearing the drive as soon as we were up. Went down to Bakewell for the paper and to empty bottle bins, but the road was a bit precarious in places, which is unusual as the road is normally kept well gritted. On the way back we called into Green Cowden Farm and they said we could expect up to 8 inches of snow that afternoon. So we called into Andrews to ask for the use of the snow plough if required. He was with the vet as two of his cows were not well. The last of the cows came inside today. Back home one of the cleaners called in for a couple of hours but left when the weather started to close in. We had invited some friends over for the afternoon but felt it might be better to rearrange this. Our remaining guests had trouble getting the car back up the drive so they left it in a safe spot. We certainly had a couple of inches of snow so it was to an even whiter landscape that we woke up on the Monday. I hate changeovers in the rain but in the snow it is even worse. One cottage out today with five due back in to our peak district cottages. Chris was out early again and spent about five hours clearing the drive and car park and courtyard. Ian came up with the snowplough to help and also one of our cleaners children helped too. They wanted to build a snowman but it was too soft. With the weather hampering cleaning yesterday we were playing catch up today, especially as one of the cleaners had to wait until she could dig her car out and leave her village. With two cleaners up we managed to finish just before 3pm. I was beginning to panic at one stage and although I was helping by making beds there were still the final Christmas touches we put in the cottages which Chris usually does. With him occupied elsewhere I also had to find time for these too. I lost count of the number of times I put my wellies on and took them off. Two cottages arrived just after 3pm, one at 4pm and two just after 6pm. They have been before. A few more to arrive over the next few days. Now I need to catch up with everything else!

Nearly there Friday/Saturday 18/19 December

No cottages in or out on Friday and final two Christmas trees in cottages up. No more snow at the moment but heavy falls in other part of the country. Barely above freezing today. Time for my preparations in empty cottages for next week. Checking all salt and pepper pots full, enough washing up liquid and hand wash and bin bags and dishwasher tablets etc in the cottages! Saturday dawned bright again and went down to Farmers Market. It was -6 in Bakewell but the roads were OK because there had been no snow and the gritters had been out. One cottage out today and one back into our pet friendly cottages later, arriving about 4pm. Time to put up our tree. I’m all tree’d out! Had about an inch of snow on Saturday evening. Could have gone to Over Haddon for this months film, a classic B&W Christmas film, Miracle on 34th Street, but decided not to go because of the snow.

More trees and arrivals Wednesday/Thursday 16/17 December

A dull day on Wednesday and time to put up two more trees. Getting there! One cottage in today. Forecast for next few days looks ominous, last thing we need just before Xmas is snow. Had hoped might get a few last minute weekend bookings but with snow forecast it seems unlikely. Thursday was a lot brighter but we did have a few flurries which left a very light dusting of snow. One cottage into our peak district cottages, they have been before. Two cleaners up today to keep up with cleaning and preparations for next week. Handyman up as well to finish off last bits in Bluebell and help Chris tidy up outside. Also went to Bakewell for our dental check up. Also finished writing Christmas cards. Phew.

Bits and Chatsworth Monday/Tuesday 14/15 December

A quiet Monday with no guests in or out and the chance to go to Bakewell market, but with a lot to do this week I decided not to. Two cleaners up today to keep up with cleaning. Work progressing well on Bluebell bedroom and with no handyman here today we took the opportunity to go to Chatsworth House later in the day. With the House decorated for Christmas and still open for another week it was busy. I felt the theme worked better this year. On Tuesday we had one cottage out of our Bakewell cottages. I went to Bakewell in the morning to get some provisions and in the afternoon I put up another two trees in cottages. In the evenings I have started to do Christmas cards hence no blogging.

Still on the go Saturday/Sunday 12/13 December

A brighter day with better visibility. One cleaner up to clean two cottages as two cottages due in to our Derbyshire cottages today. One has been before. Time to start with cottage Christmas trees and two put up this afternoon. First cottage arrived just after 4pm and second one just after 6.30pm An early dinner then off to Curbar church for the Baslow Choir Christmas concert. No hand bells this year but a wonderful bass who will be singing at the spring concert in Sheffield. A quick drink afterwards finished off the evening. Had planned to spend Sunday writing Xmas cards but mentioned there was a craft fair in the Dome at Buxton so we made an excursion there. Over coffee we planned some work that needed to be done over the next few weeks, sometimes it is a good idea to get away so you can have uninterrupted conversations! One of the exhibitors at the Dome was the Cheese Shop at Hartington that has been saved by a local couple who plan to sell local cheeses and other locally produced foods. Made some purchases for Christmas. Back home and after lunch I had three gift vouchers to prepare. We used to offer gift vouchers for the B&B but have been asked to provide them for some cottage breaks so happy to oblige.

It’s all go 3! Friday 11 December

Woke up to fog. After usual tasks out of the way had a visit from Sally from Peakdistrictonline, a local directory we subscribe to. Sally was instrumental in bringing the Beautiful South here to record their final album. Time to renew our subscription and time for a chat over coffee too. Then a quick trip down to Bakewell to get provisions for the weekend and final bits for Carol concert tonight. Back, lunch then Joanna collected me and we went down to the little church at Over Haddon to prepare for the evening. By now the fog had lifted but never cleared completely. Not needed for long at Over Haddon so back and a chance to catch up with things at our peak district cottages. One cottage out this morning with none returning today. Our first and only night with no-one in this year! No cleaners up today. An early dinner then I collected Joanna to go back to Over Haddon for the Carol Service itself. There were about four dozen WI ladies (plus a few children and male chauffeurs!) A lovely service and back not too late after we had cleared up, washed up and hoovered. Phew!
