Those leaves! Sunday 4 October

Well we had thought about a walk as the forecast was pretty good but Chris wanted to clear the leaves from our peak district cottages courtyard first but we had to wait for a few showers to pass over. By then it was lunchtime so by the time Chris had cleared the leaves (ably assisted by a dog) it was too late to go for a walk. Still with being away on and off over the last few weeks I have plenty of paper work and bits from dads place to sort out. Oh and its the end of the VAT quarter so Chris and I spent some time on the end of quarter accounts. Has to be done!

More changes on a windy day Saturday 3 October

Three cottages out with five back in and one staying for a second week. This weekend we will have seven cottages of our eight pet friendly cottages with pets in! A breezy day and Chris tried to clear up the leaves but as fast as he was moving them out of the courtyard they were blowing back in so that and the lawn mowing will have to wait. It meant unfortunately the courtyard was not tidy for arriving guests. Two of the arriving cottages today have been here before. Two cleaners up and cleaning finished with plenty of time to spare. Most cottages arrived between 3-4pm but one got held up in traffic so I took their Sainsbury’s delivery in for them. A quiet evening in.

Weather stats September

Before I forget here are the stats for weather at our Peak district cottages for September. We had 1.66 in of rain of which 1.07 fell on the first three days of the month with the 2nd having 0.52 in. Last September we had 4.27 in of rain. The warmest day was the 8th with the highest temp of 20.6. with the night of 7/8th being the warmest night. The coldest day was 17th with the lowest temp of 6.7 on 21/9. The coldest night was 24/25th. The highest UV was 6.2 on the 8th. Changes and Chatsworth Friday 2 October

Here we are into the last quarter of 2009. A busy Friday with four cottages out and two back in to our peak district cottages, both of which have been before. One cleaner here today to turn the two cottages around. A quick trip down to Bakewell to get provisions for the weekend. Both cottages arrived between 3 & 4 pm. Our highlight for today was a trip to Chatsworth House in the evening for a performance of The Mikado by the Derby G&S Company. This took place in the recently restored theatre. As it is a small theatre there was quite an intimate feel to the place especially as the orchestra is not hidden in a pit. The stage is very small and I thought it was quite a feat to manage the performance without anyone having any bumps! The price also included light bites and a glass of wine in the interval. It was a very enjoyable evening.

A walk with surprises Sunday 27 September

A day off from our peak district cottages. I had planned a walk with a difference today but we didn’t set off until nearly midday just to give the weather a chance to brighten up which it did. The plan was to start the walk at Calver but there was nowhere to park so we drove over to Curbar near the church and started the walk from there. Initially we walked along the Derwent River before heading into Calver. We had never explored the village of Calver itself so it was a very pleasant surprise to find some quiet streets behind the busy A623. Out of the village we headed into the countryside before taking a path down into Stoney Middleton. Again we were surprised to find a lovely village ‘blighted‘ by the A623. We came across a house for sale and the owner happened to be nearby so we chatted for a while. We then took a steep lane out of the village to the minor road that leads to Eyam although at this point we picked up a path that went back down to the River Derwent. Before we headed down we stopped in the field to have lunch. We enjoyed a wonderful view and of all days I forgot my camera! From where we were sitting we had a panorama from the Chatsworth Hunting Tower along Baslow, Curbar and Froggatt Edges to the Lodge House o the Longshaw Estate. We then set off towards the river crossing the B6001, a road we have travelled along many times, before reaching the river which we followed back to Curbar. Back home to our Bakewell cottages and a quick bite before we went and picked up Andrew and Joanna and headed to Over Haddon Village Hall for the first film of the season. This was Quantum of Solace which I have to admit I did not enjoy as much as I thought.

Farmers Market and changover Saturday 26 September

Up early to head off to the Bakewell Farmers Market leaving Chris to deal with the departing guests. Five cottages out today with five back in to our Peak District self catering cottages and two staying on for a second week. Two cleaners up today and good progress made. Three of the cottages are returning guests and by pure chance one of the cottages has come on the recommendation of an acquaintance who has also booked for this week! When the sun came out it was quite warm so this nice September weather continues. Four of the cottages arrived between 3 & 4 pm with the final one arriving just before 6pm by which time it was starting to feel cool. Time to relax after dinner.

Monsal Dale Sunday 20 September

Peak District Cottages - Monsel Dale

With a lovely day forecast we decided to go for a short walk. I chose a circular walk from Whiteladies car park on the A6 along Monsal Dale to Monsal Head and back. First we went and got the paper from Bakewell then drove along the A6 to the car park. After crossing the A6 we walked along the dale to the first footbridge and then climbed up to Monsal Head. Here we stopped at Hobbs Cafe for a coffee and cake and enjoyed the views and the blue sky. I cannot remember the last time I had see such a blue sky with no clouds! From the cafe we had a number of options of returning back to the car park and after taking some pictures of the viaduct, one of the iconic pictures of the Peak District we opted to walk down the lane in the direction of Cressbrook. We had a look at a flock of geese being fattened up for Christmas before crossing at the first footbridge over the river. We then walked under the viaduct and picked up the footpath back to Whiteladies car park. Then home via Monyash where we stopped at the cafe for a bacon roll and mug of tea and as it was warm enough we sat on the green outside. Back home and a chance to catch up on bits before our final guests for the week arrived in our peak district cottages. They have been here before. A quiet evening but a busy week ahead as I will be heading down to my dad’s bungalow for a few days tomorrow evening. Hope you enjoy the pictures!

All change! Saturday 19 Setember

There was a distinct autumnal smell in the air today although we did have a warm and mainly sunny day. So eight of our peak district cottages out with seven back in to our Bakewell cottages (and one back in tomorrow). Three cleaners up and no major problems encountered. Most weeks we have little snaggly problems to sort out, usually items mentioned on our feedback forms, which we find useful. This year though I have noticed we have been buying more tea towels and oven gloves than usual. Sometimes I find burnt oven gloves where they have bee left too close to the cooker rings. I also seemed to have had to replace more shower curtains than usual too. Chris did his usual Saturday jobs, lawn mowing and at this time of year leaf blowing. All guests arrived between 3 and 6 pm, of which two cottages are in for two weeks, both of these have been here before, and three other cottages arriving today are previous guests as are the guests arriving tomorrow so three quarters of our guests here this week are returning guests! A fish and chip supper then off to the Over Haddon Village Hall for the performance by the Bakewell Silver Band. Another enjoyable evening with the audience singing along to some of those proms favourites and I won a raffle prize!
